Domestic Violence

Domestic violence is a sensitive issue that affects families throughout the country. If you are a victim of abuse, stalking or harassment — or if you have been accused of these crimes — our experienced attorneys can help. Arguments can lead to raised voices and unintended, empty threats. Most of the time, people’s personal disagreements end in a resolution or by someone walking away. But sometimes neighbors or witnesses misunderstand what is going on and fear for someone’s safety.

Police are called in to handle domestic violence situations. They typically arrest someone and take that person out of the environment to diffuse the situation. It doesn’t matter who called the police. An arrest is likely to take place.

How Can We Help !

In most situations, police responding to a domestic complaint are not walking in to find lethal violence. Typically, a domestic violence case involves an argument or misunderstanding that got too heated. Sometimes, one person is a clear aggressor; often, the situation involves “mutual combatants.” In many situations, law enforcement is forced to make a relatively subjective decision in the face of conflicting stories: they must decide who the domestic violence suspect is and who the domestic abuse victim is.

How Do You Know You Need a Lawyer?

Domestic violence laws apply to assaults against persons involved in specific kinds of relationships with the defendant. If you are entering a domestic abuse case, you need a lawyer that will fight for you and the protection of your family. Self-defense may not be a viable strategy to employ in a domestic violence situation, as it is often difficult to determine with any certainty which individual initiated the incident, especially in the absence of reliable, impartial witnesses.
